Ted Allen’s Chopped: Own It! Recap 4-17-12

Chopped Champions

Ted Allen introduces the four Chefs that will compete for the $10,000 and title of Chopped Champion. The chefs must use hearts of palm, rabbit escabeche, goat chops and blue tortilla chips to make three spectacular dishes for the judges.

The judges for tonight’s competition are as follows;

  • Chris Santos
  • Alex Guarnaschelli
  • Marcus Samuelsson

The Chefs competing for the title and $10,000 tonight are as follows;

  • Chef Miguel Escobedo – L.A.
  • Chef Nelly Godfrey – N.Y.C.
  • Chef Vito Facciabeno – Bronx, N.Y.
  • Chef Kris Wessel – Miami

APPETIZER ROUND
Ted Allen told the Chefs that they will be judged on Creativity, Taste and Presentation and they must use all of the ingredients in the basket in some way. He tells them that they have 20 minutes to complete the round and has them open their baskets which includes the following ingredients;

  • Injera
  • Hearts of Palm
  • Mache
  • Rabbit Escabeche

After the Chefs completed their dishes they were presented to the Judges and given the following critiques;

Chef Miguel prepared Rabbit Sopas w/ Hot & Cold Salsa. The judges said they loved his dish but found bones in the rabbit and he left off the Injera.

Chef Kris prepared Rabbit Crepes w/ Heart of Palm Salad. The judges said they liked the crispy crepes and how he honored the mache but they found bones in the crepe.

Chef Nelly prepared Peruvian Causa w/ Stuffing and Potato Salad. The judges loved her potato salad but did not like finding whole pieces of uncooked garlic and bones in her dish. They said her dish was flat. She cut herself and struggled after the fact.

Chef Vito prepared a Warm Rabbit Salad w/ Mache Salad. The judges said they liked his dish but found a bone in his dish.

After careful deliberation the judge chopped Chef Nelly Godfrey for the reasons above and kept a chef that left off an unforgivable ingredient. Hmm.

ENTREE ROUND
Ted Allen told the Chefs they have 30 minutes to complete the round and has them open their baskets which includes the following ingredients;

  • Goat Chops
  • Dragon Tongue Beans
  • Cinnamon Schnapps
  • Dark Chocolate

After the Chefs completed their dishes they were presented to the Judges and given the following critiques;

Chef Vito prepared Grilled Goat Chops w/ Raspberry Sweet & Spicy Sauce and Sweet Potato Chips. The judges loved his chops and the sauce but said his chips were oily, salty and soggy.

Chef Chris prepared Caribbean Spiced Chops w/ Chocolate Rice. The judges loved the chops and disliked the under cooked rice though they liked the flavor of the rice.

Chef Miguel prepared Chocolate & Coffee Rubbed Chops w/ Cinnamon Dragon Bean Salad. Two of the judges said his chops were over cooked but loved their flavor and they liked the bean salad. They also called him out for only plating one chop per plate.

After careful deliberation the judges chopped Chef Miguel Escobedo for the above reasons.

DESSERT ROUND
Ted Allen told the Chefs they have 30 minutes to complete the round and has them open their baskets which includes the following ingredients;

  • Hollandaise Sauce  (in a jar)
  • Fresh Strawberries
  • Walnuts
  • Blue Corn Tortilla Chips

After the Chefs completed their dishes they were presented to the Judges and given the following critiques;

Chef Kris prepared Strawberry Tarts w/ Whipped Cream & Walnuts. The judges said it was not sweet enough but they thought it was well composed and tasty.

Chef Vito prepared Dessert Nachos w/ Strawberry Sauce and Whipped Cream. The judges liked his dessert but said the Hollandaise broke and became oily.

After careful deliberation of all of the dishes they chopped Chef Vito Facciabeno for technical execution and declared Chef Kris Wessel “Chopped Champion” and the winner of $10,000.

Ted Allen’s Chopped: Own It! Recap 4-17-12 — 8 Comments

  1. What??? Vito was chopped on the “Own It!” episode?? No way!! Such a disappointment. Nothing against Kris, but Vito should have won. Sophistication isn’t one of the criteria the contestants are jugded upon. Taste, creativity, and presentation are the criteria, right? Give me food that tastes good and isn’t sophisticated any day of the week.

  2. I was really pulling for Chef Vito. While the sophistication of his food may not have been the same as Chef Kris. I feel his heart and commitment to flavor was better. I hope someone, somewhere saw this and offered him a position where he can provide for his family. His personal story touched my heart and I would like to see him succeed.

  3. Vito was robbed.
    Fix! Fix!!

    The goat was cooked perfectly and his dessert was an actual dessert. He didn’t serve rabbit bones to the chefs like the other 3 chefs did.

    I suspect fight promoter, Don King, was somehow involved with this.

  4. I think Chef Vito screwed up when he said to the judges “I won the money!” I do not think that personnel problems should come into play till after the competition is over. It is a cooking competition and not a fix my problem arena. The one thing we never get to do as viewers is taste the food as the judges do. The show is edited and we never get to hear and see it all.

  5. Understood. Vito was certainly a bit presumptuous; and those kinds turn me off when they start talking like that. And the braggarts rarely deliver. But it sounded like Vito delivered. And I did want to tell him, “less talking and more cooking.”

    Going by what the judges said, it did seem like Vito’s victory was a done deal. They said that Kris’ rice wasn’t at all good. His dessert was more savory than sweet, he served rabbit bones, he failed to mask the vinegar flavor of the Hollandaise sauce … At least the way the episode was edited, suggested that Vito was the clear victor.

  6. I feel Chef Vito Won !!!! He was robbed …however dont give up Chef Vito may God Bless You and your family…..Stay strong you will over come ..

  7. Now I remember why I hate this show – everytime I watch the judges (led by that snobby wench) always choose the chef who looks most like a chef! By tonight’s criteria – I could have won! Being creative and imaginitive was awarded over taste?? Foodies are such snobs. Seriously – get a life. I’ll take Vito’s good tasting food over Chris’s good taste ‘appearance’ any day!

  8. Creativity and presentation is part of the judging criteria as well as taste. Unfortunately viewers never get to taste the food so we do not know which had the best overall flavors.
