The judges for tonight’s competition are as follows;

  • Chef Alex Guarnaschelli
  • Chef Marcus Samuelsson
  • Chef Chris Santos

The Chefs competing for the title and $10,000 tonight are as follows;

  • Chef Shania Thomas, Teen Chef, Food and Finance High School, New York, NY.
  • Chef Joel Allette, Teen Chef, 4Food Restaurant, New York, NY
  • Chef Romilly Newman, Teen Chef and Blogger, Little Girl in the Kitchen, New York, NY
  • Chef Noah Museles, Teen Chef, Kale and Chocolate, Washington, D.C.

Ted Allen told the Chefs that they will be judged on Creativity, Taste and Presentation and they must use all of the ingredients in the basket in some way.

APPETIZER ROUND
He tells them that they have 30 minutes to complete the round and has them open their baskets which includes the following ingredients;

  • gummy bacon
  • frozen Lima beans
  • lemon sorbet
  • salmon fillets

After the Chefs completed their dishes they were presented to the judges and given the following critiques;

Chef Joel prepared Blackened Salmon w/ Lima Bean Puree & Arugala Salad. The judges said the skin of the fish tasted like bacon. His fish was juicy and tender. His lima beans tasted like butter beans.

Chef Romilly prepared Seared Salmon w/ Lemon Sauce & Lima Bean Puree & Arugula Salad w/ Candy Bacon Vinaigrette. The judges said her fish was overcooked but her vinaigrette was dynamite.

Chef Noah prepared Asian Marinated Salmon w/ Lima Bean Puree & Green Salad. The judges said his marinade was great and loved the grill effect on the salmon. They said his puree was a bit heavy. They liked his salad.

Chef Shania prepared Seared Salmon w/ Asian Marinade & Lima Bean Salad. The judges said it was the best salmon in the round, her presentation outstanding. The goat cheese addition whimsical. Her dish lacked a sauce.

After careful deliberation the judges chopped Chef Romilly for the reasons above. She was the youngest of the four at 13 years old.

ENTREE ROUND
Ted Allen told the Chefs they have 30 minutes to complete the round and has them open their baskets which includes the following ingredients;

  • cotton candy
  • chicken cutlets
  • Brussels sprouts
  • French-fried onions

After the Chefs completed their dishes they were presented to the Judges and given the following critiques;

Chef Noah prepared Spicy Pan Roasted Cutlets w/ Sweet Potato Puree & Onion & Sprouts. The judges said they loved the puree though the cutlets were a bit dry. They were split on too spicy and liked the spice of the cutlets.

Chef Shania prepared Spicy Chicken Cutlets w/ Bacon Brussel Sprouts Salad. The judges said she made a mis-step with her wine sauce and some of the sprouts were under-cooked but the flavors came through.

Chef Joel prepared Fried Onion Cutlets w/ Balsamic Brussel Sprouts & Bourbon Cotton Candy Sauce. The judges said they loved the sprouts with the balsamic and the crust on the chicken but the sauce was too perfume and inedible.

After careful deliberation the judges chopped Chef Joel for the above reasons.

DESSERT ROUND
Ted Allen told the Chefs they have 30 minutes to complete the round and has them open their baskets which includes the following ingredients;

  • zucchini
  • chocolate cake mix
  • crème fraîche
  • movie theater popcorn

After the Chefs completed their dishes they were presented to the Judges and given the following critiques.

Chef Shania prepared Chocolate Stuffed Crepes w/ Popcorn Crumble and Raspberry Topping. The judges said they were the best crepes they ever tasted on the show. They felt it was a complete dessert and well composed.

Chef Noah prepared Deconstructed Chocolate Ice Cream w/ Popcorn Brittle. The judges loved the ice cream but said the creme fresh was over whipped which gave it a cottage cheese texture. They said his zucchini was disconnected from the rest of the dish.

After careful deliberation the judges chopped Chef Noah for the reasons above. Chef Shania wins the $10,000 and title of Chopped Champion.

The three chopped Chefs received  a $1000.00 gift certificate to foodnetworkstore.com

I thought these kids showed more composure and creativity than most of the adult contestants that appear on the show. I congratulate them on a great showing of their culinary skills. No drama, tears or sob stories by the contestants was a refreshing change and the show should feature more teens in competition.
